The book *Spectacle and Celebration in the Pan-Hispanic World: Mexico, Madrid, Manila—Baroque Conceptions and Contemporary Projections* was published in February 2026 by the Collection de la Casa de Velázquez. Its editors are Miguel Zugasti (UNAV) and Ana Zúñiga Lacruz ( UR), members of group . Its content is available in two formats: in print and online, with the online version available in its entirety and free of charge.
This miscellaneous collection brings together the research of 18 specialists from different countries (five of whom are members of TriviUN: Covadonga Romero Blázquez, Daniel Docampo, Iñaki Pérez-Ibáñez, and the aforementioned Miguel Zugasti and Ana Zúñiga Lacruz) who explore the pan-Hispanic celebratory and festive sphere from amultidisciplinary approach , analyzing its meanings, functions, characteristics, elements, messages, and implications.
The book is divided into five main sections: “Festive Poetry and Prose: Literary Contests, Academies, and Accounts of Festivals in the 17th and 18th Centuries,” “Beyond the Ocean Sea: Neptunes and Narcissuses in Sor Juana,” “Exultation to the Extreme: Parades, Processions, and Ceremonies in New Spain and the Philippines,” “The Scenic Phenomenon: Actors, Dancers, and Theatrical Performance,” and “The Party Was Ruined: Confrontations and Controversies in Festive Settings.” These chapters delve deeply into the complex fabric of urban festivities across the entire Pan-Hispanic world (Spain, the Americas, and the Philippines), exploring their theatrical, dance-based, and political dimensions, as well as the subsequent portrayals and reenactments of these festive events.
The editing and publication of this work marks the partnership agreement with the Casa de Velázquez and the Sorbonne University–Paris IV, institutions with which the project festiva: celebration, heritage, mentalities” was carried out during the 2022–2024 period.
