The Cathedral of Pamplona and the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra, in partnership with the German publishing house Reichenberger, have published the unique version of Mozart's Requiem preserved in the cathedral's musical file . The volume, graduate Mozart's Requiem in Pamplona (1844): study and music edition | El Réquiem de Mozart en Pamplona (1844): estudio y edición musical | El Réquiem de Mozart en Pamplona (1844): estudio y edición musical was presented at the Rococo Chapel.
The event, open to the public, coincided with the anniversary of the premiere of the score. Representatives of the institutions responsible for the recovery project intervened.
"This special and unique score was recovered last year by the Capilla de Música and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra under the baton of Aurelio Sagaseta, chantre and maestro de Capilla of the Pamplona Cathedral, during the solemn Requiem Mass in report of all the faithful departed celebrated in the Pamplona Cathedral", explains Rafael Zafra, researcher of the University of Navarra and partner of the ICS. The complete recording can be seen on Youtube.
The critical edition was written by Aurelio Sagaseta himself, and is preceded by a study by Miguel Ángel Marín, director of the Music Program of the March Foundation and professor of Musicology at the University of La Rioja.
The score, as sample in this study, was prepared for the solemn funeral obsequies of Infanta Luisa Carlota de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, mother of Francisco Asís de Borbón y Parma -and, therefore, mother-in-law of Queen Isabel II- held in Pamplona in 1844.
"The unpublished version of Mozart's Requiem now published contains some substantive variants with respect to the original that make it unique," details Rafael Zafra. "For example, it modernizes the orchestration replacing the original corni di basseto and trombones with clarinets, bassoons and horns, while adding a double bass from new invoice".
This publication is the third in the Chantria collection, which is the result of the project de partnership signed between the ICS of the University of Navarra and the Chapter of the Cathedral of Pamplona and coordinated by Rafael Zafra.
