A project of the University of Navarra will analyze the experiences of dependent elderly people and their families to empirically support whether the aids currently offered by the Dependency Law meet the needs and expectations of these caregivers.

The study, led by the School of Nursing under the degree scroll "Ley de Dependencia: experiencias de la familia y del anciano dependiente en la transición a la dependencia", has as its main goal to evidence the impact of the transition to dependency on the elderly person and their caregivers.

"The 'new' needs posed by the aging of the population and the decrease in the capacity of families to care for their relatives in status of dependence require increasing the issue of resources and initiatives aimed at the 'family caregiver'," explains Cristina G. Vivar, principal investigator of project. "However," she adds, "the research on the experiences of families and dependent elderly people on the effectiveness of the available resources is still in its early stages in our country.

Interventions for families and health professionals

The University of Navarra study will be carried out in the Autonomous Community of Navarra, with a sample made up of elderly dependents who have been evaluated by the Dependency Law and their families. Participants with diverse circumstances will be selected through the San Francisco Javier Day Center, a psycho-geriatric center under the Navarra Health Service-Osasunbidea, as well as the department of Social Welfare, which offers comprehensive care to people over 65 years of age who present some subject of cognitive deficit. The collection of data will be carried out by means of in-depth interviews, with the prior signed consent of all the participants in the study.

"Knowing these experiences," says Cristina G. Vivar, "will make it possible to program financial aid interventions according to the needs expressed by the families themselves, as well as to develop specific training interventions aimed at health professionals working in services or care units for dependent elderly people.

The group researcher , made up of a team multidisciplinary, is formed by four professors from the University of Navarra: Cristina G. Vivar, Ana Canga and Mercedes Pérez, from the School of Nursing; and Concepción Naval, from department of Education. It is also made up of a care nurse, Maite Echeverría; a psychologist, David Brugos; and a gerontologist, Rafael Sánchez-Ostiz.

This study is a pioneer in the field of care for dependent elderly people, as its approach is based on the "family as a unit of care". The project is part of Caja Navarra's "You choose, you decide" initiative and can be voted on the web or at the bank's branches.
