United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands, the most developed in the EU in palliative care

According to a research of the ICS of the University of Navarra, Spain leave from 5th place (2007) to 11th place in resources allocated to this area and in its promotion.

The United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands - tied for second place - and Sweden are the European Union nations with the highest development of palliative care. This is according to a research led by the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra.

According to the ranking, Spain occupies the position issue 11. It is one of the countries that has experienced one of the most significant declines (in 2007 it was in 5th place), along with France (from 7th to 14th) and Greece (from 19th to 27th).

To analyze the development of palliative care, a comparison was made between data in 2007 and 2013. The researchers analyzed the resources available in each country and their vitality, i.e. the issue of activists, professionals and associations trying to promote palliative care. According to the team, this study methodology based on two variables makes it possible to analyze the evolution of palliative care more simply and with the same reliability as result .

Two variables: resources and vitality

With regard to section of resources, the most advanced country is Luxembourg, with a score of 72 out of 84. The United Kingdom (68) and Belgium (66) are in second and third place, respectively. Spain, meanwhile, is issue 12, with 49 points, a drop from 2007, when it was in eighth position with 57 points.

Germany and the United Kingdom lead the vitality ranking with an 8, maximum grade possible, both in 2007 and 2013. Spain has a 7 and is in third position, along with Belgium, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland Italy, the Netherlands and Romania. Spain is the only country in third place that has not changed its grade since 2007.

Those responsible for the research are the researchers of the ATLANTES Program of the ICS, in partnership with David Clark, from the University of Glasgow, and coordinated under the direction of Carlos Centeno, director of the ATLANTES Program and the Palliative Medicine Unit of the ICS.
