Benefit to patients

The professor of the School of Medicine of the University of Navarra José Masdeu has been appointed member of the committee of Direction of the association North American Society for Nervous System Therapeutic Trials (ASENT). The new position, which will last for 4 years, represents for Masdeu "an opportunity to enrich the University's work , aimed at finding of more effective therapies, easier to administer and with fewer side effects".

José Masdeu, doctor of the Clinic and researcher of the CIMA of the University of Navarra, focuses his work at research on more effective therapies for diseases of the nervous system.

The choice has been motivated by Dr. Masdeu's interest in the development of new therapies and disease markers, as well as by the publication of several articles in the association journal "Neurotherapeutics".

From now until 2011, the position will involve "participation in decision-making on the most important issues of the association, such as the program of the annual congress , publications and actions that can be suggested to the agencies to improve the methodology leading to the implementation of new therapies".
 

Benefit to patients

ASENT is made up of physicians, representatives of pharmaceutical companies and drug regulatory agencies in the USA. It promotes the development of drugs, both in the preclinical (programs of study molecular and experimental animal phases) and clinical (dosing and effects in volunteers; then application to patients) phases. "We are mainly concerned with improving the methodology of all these steps, so that useful drugs can be made available to patients as quickly as possible," explains Masdeu.

graduate specialization program Masdeu holds a degree in Medicine from the Central University of Madrid and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Navarra (1984). He studied Psychiatry in Valencia (Spain) and Neurology in Chicago (Chicago). Since 2000 he has been Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Navarra, where he directs the department of Neurosciences at the School of Medicine. His research activity has focused on the application of neuroimaging to the study of diseases of the nervous system and the study of postural control in humans. Author of more than 150 scientific publications, including 5 books, in a survey of American physicians (American Health), he was considered one of the best 22 neurologists of the 7,000 in the USA.
