63 researchers from doctorate of the area of experimental and health sciences of the University of Navarra have met for the ninth consecutive year to share their work. This is a workshop aimed at improving the communication of science carried out in the laboratories of the academic center.

Scientists from the Schools of Nursing, Sciences, Pharmacy and Nutrition, Medicine, from the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) and from the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (CUN) presented their research throughout the workshop through papers and posters located on the ground floor of the Hexagon Building.

Among the papers, Rubén Hernández Soto showed the progress of his thesis doctoral work on the evolution of the barn owl in the European agricultural landscape. As he has been able to confirm, the use of the territory by the barn owl has changed significantly in the last 20 years. The main difference can be seen in the subject of Building that it occupies: "While they used to frequent villages, today they are relegated to the pens on the periphery of urban centers, conditioning the perception of their presence in the territory".

From CIMA Marta Pérez explained the role of two enzymes in the development of new therapies for Alzheimer's disease: "A new molecule synthesized in our laboratories, which simultaneously inhibits two enzymes, has been able to improve the symptoms of the disease in a transgenic mouse model ", said the scientist.

Parents and their role in the fight against childhood obesity

Cayetana Ruiz, a doctoral student in Nursing, presented her work on the competencies of parents as tool to promote health. According to this future PhD in Nursing, "taking into account that according to the WHO there are already more than 42 million children under five years of age with childhood obesity in the world, parents are essential to develop the role of a healthy life, with the support of health professionals".

In the field of Pharmacy and Nutrition Ana Brotons showed the contribution of her research in the field of allergies. As she explained, it is estimated that at least 20% of the population suffers from some kind of allergy subject . Among them, food allergies, which are gaining ground: "Some foods such as milk, seafood, nuts, soy and peanuts are frequently associated with allergy and at least 0.4% of Europeans have peanut allergy. At our work we have developed a new immunotherapy pathway based on nanoparticles that transport allergens into the body."

From the Medical Oncology Department of the Clínica Marta Román explained her findings on the effect of some predictive biomarkers of the most widespread lung cancer, CNMP, which accounts for 80% of diagnoses: "For the moment our work seems to indicate that inhibition of the expression of two specific genes significantly reduces both the growth of tumor cells and their invasive capacity, essential for generating metastasis".
