Mónica Vázquez, supervisor of the nursing professional development at Clínica Universidad de Navarra, explains in this interview the increased demand for innovative nursing roles.

What profile nurse is increasingly sought after?
In response to new health care demands and the challenge of promote a cost-effective and safe care system, nursing profiles are sought with greater autonomy and involvement in decision making, with the ability to develop transformational leadership and innovate care and health services beyond the boundaries of the traditional internship .
Is it advisable to training of Master's Degree, in addition to specialization program?
Undoubtedly. The training of Master's Degree and the specialization program are different opportunities, but totally complementary to continue advancing in nursing. Being a specialist in Intensive Care has given me a clinical knowledge expert in that area, which was core topic to make the most of the training of Master's Degree and to be able to integrate the advanced internship and the research in the professional internship . The Master's Degree changed my way of looking, of understanding my surroundings, it opened my mind.
What does the training continuous bring to nursing?
The training continuous brings value to Nursing, makes it possible for us to be heard and taken into account. It provides autonomy, professional growth and staff, generating greater recognition and visibility for Nursing. The continuous training is core topic to keep moving forward.
What are the new demands for a healthcare professional at management ?
Healthcare managers are demanded to be visionary leaders and know how to respond to a changing reality, with an emphasis on containing expense and increasing the quality of care. They are core topic figures to empower frontline nurses to be agents of change and improve patient care and those aspects of the environment that affect them.
As supervisor of the Clinic's nursing professional development , how do you see the students who come to the Clinic for their internships?
From my point of view, the students who come to the Clinic are increasingly prepared to face complex situations at internship. The simulated internship in the School of Nursing of the University of Navarra is already a reality and is helping students to develop a greater reflective capacity and experiential learning to handle certain situations of the real internship .
You recently defended your thesis on "Nursing Decision Making in Protocol-Based Care", what role does the nurse have in a healthcare team?
The nurse plays a role core topic within the healthcare team, since he/she is the professional who is closest to the patients and who, therefore, is in a privileged position to know what their needs and responses are at any given moment. Her role is to transfer the patient's needs to the rest of the team and to participate in decision making to design the therapeutic plan multidisciplinary.
Where do you see the future of the profession going?
In recent decades, the nursing profession has made a considerable effort to adapt to changes and provide the population with a care response in line with their needs. Remarkable progress has been made in this field, including health promotion, the management of chronic patients and the implementation of advanced role profiles.
In this line, the future of our profession lies in developing new ways of working that include innovative roles and profiles, demonstrating the positive impact that the implementation of these roles has on patients/families, the organization and sustainability of the healthcare system, leading new changes in the development of healthcare services and collaborating with other professionals in redesigning healthcare systems. To address all these challenges, it is of utmost importance to train nursing professionals with a greater training.
