The Full Professor of Statistics of the Institute for Culture and SocietyJesús López Fidalgo has been in charge of teaching the January seminar of the group Science, Reason and Faithwhich focused on explaining whether statistical demonstration is scientific.

López Fidalgo explained that scientific research , among many things, is deductive and inductive and that modern statistics has come to give mathematical consistency to induction through the laws of chance. In this sense, the researcher and Associate Professor of the National University of Colombia in Medellin showed how it does so by using the natural processes of the human mind to draw conclusions from simple data .

During his exhibition he addressed the possibility of manipulation in all phases of the research, from the planning of the collection of data to decision making based on the interpretation of the results. He used simple examples to address some burning issues such as causal inference, Bayesian procedures, ethical-statistical issues, the treatment of massive data , the statistical detection of fraudulent data or the difficulty of making predictions when human freedom comes into play.

Jesús López Fidalgo has made extended stays of research and teaching at the Universities of Manchester, Glasgow, UCLA and California at Riverside; vice-president of the Society of Statistics and research Operational and publisher-head of the journal Test. He is also an elected member of high school International Statistician. He has been manager of the National Mathematics Plan in the Ministry of Science and Innovation (2009-2011) and director of the School of Industrial Engineering of the UCLM (2008-2016). He has published more than 100 articles in scientific journals. Author of the book of knowledge dissemination El azar no existe. He has directed thirteen doctoral thesis and coordinates a node of the network national biostatistics.
