University to train oncology nurses to carry out family-centered care in oncology procedures

A team composed of professors and researchers from the School of Nursing and nurses from the Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra, has organized a training program for oncology nurses graduate "Attention and care for the family living with an oncologic process.". This is a training distributed in three modules that includes topics such as the approach to the impact that the oncological disease has on the family, communication skills to establish an adequate therapeutic relationship with the patient and his/her family, as well as tools for evaluation and family intervention.

This team leads since 2017 a project called ProyeKTA Family Nursing UNAV with the purpose to implement a model family-centered care in the internship clinical in oncology. With this project, pioneer in Spain, the aim is to improve the health of patients and their families, and to offer more effective health services and products in order to strengthen the health care system.

Through this model, care becomes accessible, comprehensive and coordinated, as it recognizes a permanent partnership between patient, family and nurse to manage the different health states that the patient goes through during the disease.

This course is aligned with one of the Cancer Center's priority purposes Clínica Universidad de Navarra to offer an excellent clinical internship putting the patient, and his or her family, at the center of all activity. The new center brings together more than four decades of experience in the treatment and research of cancer at the University of Navarra, and its mission statement is to integrate, coordinate and strengthen all the cancer care, research and professor activities carried out at the Clinic, the Cima and the Schools of area biosanitary in the campus of Pamplona and Madrid.
