Under the degree scroll I+P+i: Impact of patents in research, the workshop organized by the Enterprise Europe Network node of the University of Navarra has brought together all public and private agents of research and development+i in a session that has aroused the interest of about a hundred people.

goal The main objective of this session was to inform researchers and managers of some of the benefits of industrial property in universities and technology centers, such as the use of patent information as source of enquiry in research projects and the transfer of knowledge and technology. Likewise, the aim was to raise awareness of the importance of industrial property when drafting and executing a project of research.

Public funding agencies, such as the Service of research and development +i of the Government of Navarra and the CDTI, have participated in the same, explaining the importance of industrial property in the assessment of proposals and granting of aid from research and development. Aditech, an organization that promotes cooperation between universities and technology centers with the business, also participated, represented by María Uresandi, who explained how this partnership should be regulated from the point of view of industrial property, for example, through the signature of a agreement "which clearly includes all the issues related to know-how and regulates the ownership of the results".

On behalf of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, Mariano Nieto, Head of the Patent Search Service, gave a presentation at discussion paper where he highlighted the usefulness of the information contained in patent documents, and specifically of the ITP (Patent Technology Reports) at research, especially at the beginning of projects, to avoid redundant research and develop innovative proposals, and also as source of technological information to which researchers can turn to at any stage of the project.

Xavier Tapias, manager of the department of Valorization and Transfer and Cristina Natal, manager of Industrial and Intellectual Property, both from the University of Navarra, explained how the transfer of knowledge is carried out from the university and how a good management of industrial property can be used strategically to maximize the value of the results of a project of research and development. They also emphasized the idea core topic for any research of "patenting before publishing", since a correct protection of the results increases the possibility of bringing them closer to the market in the form of innovative products or services, and allows to actively participate in the economic development and generate returns on the investment in research.

In the turn of the Public University of Navarra, Iñaki Casado intervened, informing the attendees about the latest successful cases of transfer to the market from the UPNA and stressing that "if you really want to help society, it is important to patent before disclosing the result of the research, otherwise, no business will be interested in acquiring this technology".

The event concluded with the intervention of the University of Alicante, EEN node of the Valencian Community, with a series of recommendations on how to use the free services that the European Commission makes available to researchers and innovative SMEs, both when looking for partners to participate in projects research and development internationally and through the world's largest marketplace for technology supply and demand.
