More than 400 people participated in the inaugural session of the cycle 'Training to understand disability' organized by Tantaka, the Solidarity Time Bank of the University of Navarra. In this fifth edition the different sessions and workshops will focus on the topic: "How to deal with people with disabilities?".
"Disability is something much more normal than we think," stressed the manager of the Iddeas Foundation, Luis Casado, during the introductory session of the cycle that took place on Monday, January 29 at the University Museum of Navarra. Casado recalled that the social inclusion of people with disabilities is not a matter of laws, but of day-to-day life. "Normalizing means that we are all equal, although some of us function differently," he added.
In the same vein, the president of the committee of Entities Representing People with Disabilities of Navarra (CERMIN), María Luz Sanz, said that "disability is a characteristic that is not of the person, but the result of the interaction of that person with their environment. Creating easy and accessible environments depends on everyone".
Sanz believes that to begin to treat any person with a disability it is enough to set five objectives: pay attention to him or her, talk directly to him or her and not to his or her companion; treat him or her as an adult, if he or she is one; avoid paternalistic attitudes and see the person from a perspective of equality.
For her part, Cristina García-Aguayo, representative of the Los Perro Verde collective, took the opportunity to give the audience an interactive test. In this way, attendees were able to "test themselves" on the attention to people with disabilities.
Finally, the coordinator of Tantaka, Sofía Collantes, invited the attendees to participate in the workshops that will take place every Monday in February at Amigos Building.
