Diego Martín Morales, a student in 4th year of design at the University of Navarra, defines himself as half Navarrico and half Extremaduran. His paternal roots are from Extremadura, and from this rootedness is born 'Garabato', a glass jar that integrates a chestnut wood spoon. The student 's project has been awarded a runner-up in the X of the Master's Degree Glass Design Contest Vidrala, in which 140 students have participated.
Garabato' tells the story of Diego, his father, his grandfather and the rest of the cherry pickers of the Jerte Valley (Extremadura). The jar evokes the shape of a chestnut basket, and the silhouette of the spoon pays homage to the garabato, the tool used for cherry picking.
The narrative of his proposal seeks to rescue traditions that are being lost little by little and need generational replacement, such as the official document of the harvesters. "The work guide, the land and the harvesting tools are a sustainable claim," says Diego. Thus, the jar he proposes is made of recyclable glass and the wooden spoon becomes a reusable cutlery.
Diego confesses that the work of a designer consists of telling stories to awaken emotions in users. On this occasion, his project "transmits empathy and highlights the value of the territory", translating the familiar references to his design and mimicking the project with the environment of the valley.
In the words of the jury, "the picota jam jar has been recognized for its poetic and conceptual charge, as well as for the balance between form and content and for the use of traditional elements in a contemporary proposal ".
