Arantxa González Miqueo has won the 2005 Norman R. Alpert award , awarded jointly by the Basic Sciences Cardiovascular Councils of the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Society.

This award was established at report by the late Dr. Alpert, who made a significant contribution to cooperative research efforts between European and American scientists to understand the functioning of the heart. The goal of this award is to finance the stay of a European scientist - 13 were competing in this call - at a laboratory in the United States for one year to develop a project of research.

The researcher at CIMA of the University of Navarra will join Professor Piero Anversa's laboratory in 2006 at research center Cardiovascular of the New York Medical College. The project that she will develop in New York will focus on the study of the physiology of adult stem cells present in the heart or circulating in the blood, as well as the strategies that could be used to regenerate with these cells the damaged heart of hypertensive patients with heart failure.

Spain: 8 million people with hypertension, 4 million with heart problems

It is estimated that in Spain there are 8 million people with hypertension, half of whom suffer from the impact of this disease on the heart. Of these 4 million, one third will probably suffer heart failure.

Subsequently, she completed her doctoral thesis , directed by Dr. Javier Díez, on the damage suffered by cardiac cells in hypertensive patients with heart failure.

He is currently continuing his research on cardiac damage at the area of Cardiovascular Sciences of the CIMA of the University of Navarra, which is directed by Dr. Díez.
