The Relevance of Statistics in Education and Everyday Life: Celebration of the European Statistics Day
Yesterday, October 20, was celebrated as European Statistics Day. Since Roman times, censuses have been fundamental tools to count not only people, but also data on wealth and social status, which is essential for the public administration. Jesús López Fidalgo, Full Professor of Statistics at the University of Navarra, points out that nowadays statistics have become crucial for decision making and improving public health, by making it possible to evaluate the efficacy of treatments and drugs.
To commemorate this date, an event is organized on Thursday, October 24 at the Public University of Navarra, focused on the teaching of statistics. Pablo Cebrián Jiménez, director of the Institute of Statistics of Navarra, mentions that the goal of the event is to disseminate statistical science and promote its learning in a fun way. This event is part of the VIII conference of teaching and learning mathematics in Navarra and will include the participation of science popularizer Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón.
The event will include presentations by students who have participated in the contest "Avatar, discovering statistics in the country of the data", where groups of students develop practical work in statistics. This contest promotes the application of statistics in various topics of interest to young people, allowing participants to explore the world of data in a playful and educational way. Professors such as Javier Ortiz and Juan Carlos Ballabriga highlight how these initiatives enrich teaching and the learning of statistics, helping students to appreciate its relevance in everyday life.
