The University of Navarra women's tennis team debuted with a 3-2 victory in the 2016 Basque Navarre Riojan Cantabrian Club Championship against the local team, Bilbao Tenis Club.

The tie played in Bilbao began with the victory of Elizaveta Belova for the University of Navarra by 6-1 6-1 to Mari Carmen Antunez, Teresa Prado played a great match in which she had her chances but ended up losing by a tight 6-4 6-3 against Sandra Payo. The third point was the most evenly matched, and in it Cristina Sanz had to fight until the end to end up winning in the Super TieBreak of the third set by a tight 6-2 3-6 14-12 to Itxaso Jimenez. Finally, Maria Ysasi lost to Marta Sanz in a match with result misleading as it was the longest, with almost two hours of match, and lost 6-0 6-2.

In the final doubles Elizaveta Belova and Cristina Sanz beat Marta Sanz and Sandra Payo by 6-0 7-5 giving the tie to the University of Navarra.

The team, which was captained by Alberto Sanz and Gonzalo Ibañez, will face Club Tenis Pamplona on March 20. The complete team of the University of Navarra is composed by María Ysasi, Teresa Prado, Laura Revert, Cristina Sanz, Madalena Matoso, Carmen Bistuer, Elizabeta Belova, Andrea Aristu and Ina de la Rosa.

The men's team makes its debut on February 27 in Santander.

Cross Country Championship

On the other hand, this past weekend was held in Burgos the Spanish University Cross Country Championships. With a participation of 45 universities and 140 athletes. Representing the University of Navarra competed Ignacio Tanco, student of Tecnun and Pablo Romero, student of Architecture. Tanco obtained a meritorious 19th place and Romero came in 36th.
