Diana González: "The digital footprint includes what we publish but also what others say about us".

The expert in Digital Communication appealed at the University of Navarra to the 10-10-10 rule and was skeptical about the possibility of eliminating the trace: "Once we publish, the content ceases to be ours".

"On the Internet there is what I say and what others say about me, but the most important thing is what others see," explained Diana Gonzalez, a former student of the University of Navarra's Communication School and specialist in Digital Communication manager . The speaker was invited by the ISSA Management Lab student club of the academic center, where she gave the session "Digital Identity: our footprint on the network".

Gonzalez stressed the importance of taking care and planning the development of the digital identity staff because it encompasses "everything that characterizes us and differentiates us from brands on the Internet: we compete on equal terms with everyone, including companies". This is why it is important to bear in mind that "everything communicates": what you say yourself, but also the accounts you follow on social networks, interaction, connection and publication schedules...

One of the arguments for this special treatment is the digital tracking that more and more companies are carrying out in selection processes. "As long as that digital footprint is what each of us has published in our digital spaces and that it is truthful, I think it is interesting and important that companies can review it," Gonzalez justified. There are equal conditions to publish or omit, so it seems to him "fair" that possible monitoring. However, "it is important to bear in mind that on the Internet there is what everyone publishes, but also what others say about us". This is where the work of employer comes in, "to evaluate if what is said is real or not and if it has another connotation", said the specialist.

Publication recommendations

Precisely, he stressed the importance of "responsibility" in terms of what is published: on the one hand, that the language employee is understandable, and on the other, "how the person who reads it will feel and if you feel comfortable with that content". In this sense, he offered as committee to use the 10-10-10 rule for decision making: "When we are going to publish something, ask ourselves if it will be the same for me to see it in 10 minutes, 10 months or 10 years".

In this regard, and on the possibility of eliminating the digital trail of network, Gonzalez was skeptical because "it is very broad and complex: things are being done very well but it seems difficult today to ensure that we delete something from the Internet, to know who has it and that it can perhaps be uploaded again". Because that trail ranges from content shared in private spaces to the dark web, including the devices themselves such as smartphones, tablets and computers. As González warned, "once we publish something on the Internet, the content is no longer ours".
