D. Félix Álvarez de la Vega, professor of the School of Pharmacy of the University of Navarra and first Dean of the center, has been awarded for his professional career in the VIII Edition of the Awards of the high school Official Pharmacists of Navarra, together with Alcer Navarra as "Health Program of Social Interest", represented by its vice-president Cayetano Reguera. The awards, sponsored by Laboratorios Cinfa, have the goal to distinguish individuals and groups that have helped the professionalization of Pharmacy.

As highlighted at the event, Mr. Félix Álvarez de la Vega has achieved great notoriety in the world of pharmacy. He was born in 1921, graduated and obtained his degree and doctorate at the School of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid. He obtained the Chair of Galenic Pharmacy at the University of Santiago de Compostela (1950). Academician of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy, director of the department of Galenic Pharmacy of the University of Navarra for 22 years, he was the creator of the Pilot Plant dedicated to the preparation of medicines for the Pharmacy Service of the Clinic of the University of Navarra, of which service he was director. partner of research at Chelsea College (London) and at the School of Pharmacy (London). He was ordained a priest in 1951. Other awards include the Gold Medal of the University of Navarra, the Silver Medal of committee General de Colegios Oficiales de Farmacéuticos and the Medal of Honor of high school Oficial de Farmacéuticos de Toledo.

In 1954 he joined the University of Navarra as professor of Chemistry of the first course of the School of Medicine. In 1964, the School of Pharmacy was created and he was its first Dean. He was a pioneer in the pharmaceutical sciences and much admired and loved by his colleagues, with whom he has maintained a very cordial relationship.

56 new members
The event was held in the Castle of Gorráiz, with a welcome to the 56 new members of 2010 and, subsequently, awards were presented to the two most outstanding thesis of this year. The finishing touch to the celebration was the emotional tribute to the four members with 50 years of collegiate membership and the submission of the VIII edition of the Awards of the high school Official Pharmacists of Navarra. Finally, there was a solidarity auction whose funds will go to the humanitarian financial aid in Haiti, through Caritas Navarra.

The awards were presided over by María Kutz, Minister of Health of the Government of Navarra, Enrique Ordieres, President of Laboratorios Cinfa -sponsor of the awards-, Pilar García, President of high school Official Pharmacists of Navarra; the Dean of the School of Pharmacy of the University of Navarra, Iciar Astiasarán; the Director General of Health of the Government of Navarra, Isabel Martín Montaner, among other authorities, several representatives of the health professional associations and academic authorities.

Awards to the outstanding doctoral thesis
On the framework of this celebration, the high school Official Pharmacists of Navarra presented the awards to the outstanding doctoral thesis in Pharmacy corresponding to the past academic year 2009-2010. The winners were Alicia Galar, for her thesis : "Impacto clínico y económico de la información rápida microbiológica" (Clinical and economic impact of rapid microbiological information). Clínica Universidad de Navarra with a clinical diagnosis of bacterial infection confirmed by culture, it was concluded that rapid information on microbiological results allowed the clinician to optimize antibiotic therapy at an early stage, which was associated with clinical improvement of the patient.

The second thesis was awarded to Almudena Lomba, from the department of Food Sciences, Physiology and Toxicology, for her work: "Study of the expression and methylation patron saint of energy metabolism genes in dietary models of obesity with different macronutrient distribution", whose goal is to evaluate whether the different macronutrient proportion of different isocaloric diets could be related to the onset of obesity.
