Sports Day: a sporting, solidarity and fun party for everyone

More than 4,000 people participated in workshop marked by solidarity and sustainability.

Sustainability and solidarity. These were the words most heard by all the participants in the 20th edition of the Sports Day. Around 4,000 people attended this quotation, held last Saturday, September 21, at the University's sports facilities, where they were able to participate in various sports activities, always marked by sustainability and solidarity.

The University wanted to show its support for the European Week of the mobility and therefore, the color green was used on the T-shirts: for promote a greener and less polluted world. Participants were also invited to come to the University by bicycle. And once at campus, they were also able to enjoy, throughout the day, various activities related to sustainability: trips on the "choo-choo" train, tours of the campus on electric bicycles, pedal-powered go-karts, and rides in fully electric cars.

In addition, the ingredient of solidarity was present at all times. Activities such as the solidarity raffle and the giant volleyball, both organized by UAS-Tantaka, were aimed at raising funds for solidarity projects. With the money raised in the raffle, cooperation projects will be carried out in developing countries development, developed by Colegios Mayores: construction of housing and schools, shipment of medicines and promotion of educational projects.

For its part, the giant volleyball match was a success, according to those responsible for the event. A total of 840 people participated and for each one of them, the University's Sports Service donated 1 euro to Tantaka for the restoration, in partnership with Caritas and the Red Cross, of houses in poor condition in Pamplona, inhabited by people without economic resources.

Another novelty of this edition was the COEX Cross COEX "Together against Cancer", a competition organized by students of the Schools of Sciences for promote the spirit of solidarity around this disease. A total of 200 runners participated.

The director of Sports Service, Javier Trigo, stressed that "the sports day is a great celebration of the University for the whole community; it is an open-door workshop in which we want sport to be, at least once a year, the protagonist of university life. Sport is a fundamental element for the training of young people and we want to highlight its importance".

Soccer, paddle tennis, chess, basketball and chess competitions were held at financial aid with the support of different organizations. Children could enjoy many activities such as inflatables, workshops, Formula 1 and moto GP simulators, and even a puppet theater. There were also fencing, Taekwondo or Kendo exhibitions inside the sports center, and the traditional paella, free of charge and aimed at all attendees.

The President, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, gave the keys to enjoy the workshop: "For us to enjoy a good Sports Day, the core topic is that the weather is good and that many people come, and so it has been. The Sports Service has organized it very well, has hired full sun, and it is a day of celebration, in which the University opens up to the city; it is a day of celebration".

The Song Festival marked the end of the VI Great Challenge "Sports Day", a team competition, which consists of overcoming a series of tests. The winners were the students of the high school Mayor Goemendi. The award, 1,500 euros, will go to help the victims of the earthquake in Condaray (Peru).

"On Sports Day, the University opens up to the city. It is a day of celebration."
