Mercedes Sotos Prieto (Master's Degree E-MENU 08) had it clear that at the end of this postgraduate program she wanted to extend her training with a postdoctorate in the U.S. From Harvard School of Public Healthwhere she is now a visiting scientist, she recognizes that the core topic to achieve her dream resided in the training she received at the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition of the University of Navarra, under the guidance of internationally renowned experts with whom she continues to collaborate in her programs of study on per diem expenses Mediterranean, lifestyle and Genetics.
- What does your work consist of at campus in the USA?
work I am a professor and visiting scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health (USA). I teach class to graduate students in the Master's Degree of Nutritional Sciences and I apply some techniques from work that I myself received, as a student, in the Master's Degree EMENU of the University of Navarra. On the other hand, most of my research is focused on the study of the quality of per diem expenses (especially the Mediterranean per diem expenses ), lifestyle and its interaction with Genetics, as well as its possible association with cardiovascular diseases, using for this purpose two large cohorts of health professionals from the Harvard School of Public Health.
- How do you apply the knowledge acquired at Master's Degree?
The Master's Degree E-MENU allowed me to be introduced to two differentiating areas, Epidemiology and Personalized Nutrition. It also allowed me to do so under the guidance of leading professors in these areas, which opened the door to the doctorate program and allowed me to continue my training abroad.
- What knowledge did you acquire in the Master's Degree that you consider to be a differential in your professional degree program ?
There are several crucial advantages for those who take the E-MENU. Firstly, the quality of the training, at position of highly qualified professors; secondly, that it allows interaction with different branches of Nutrition "live and direct", being a participant -each student has the opportunity to develop a work end of Master's Degree in various lines of research high-level-. Thirdly, I would highlight the relationships of the University of Navarra with top level institutions; and, last but not least, the fact that once you finish the specialization program, you continue to have the support of the University.
- Why would you advise a graduate interested in the field of Nutrition to take the Master's Degree E-MENU?
To the future student I would say that this postgraduate program will give you the opportunity to establish the scientific instructions and critical thinking that Nutrition and all its challenges require today. You will learn about the different areas of this field from well-trained professionals and you will be able to do the thesis end of Master's Degree in leading research lines. At the end, you will be in an environment where researchers are experts in Nutrition Epidemiology and Public Health, in the design of programs of study intervention, in Nutrition Physiology and in Personalized Nutrition, among other fields. This is a guarantee of opportunities for the future.
- Do you perceive, at the international level, that nutrition is gaining specific weight on research?
Of course it is. Nutrition is part of our lives from the moment we are born. It focuses the interest of both research and society in general, and in the future, hand in hand with technological progress -omics sciences and Personalized Nutrition-, it will generate many lines of work and new opportunities.
