The GRISO of the University of Navarra organizes a congress on chronicles of the Indies in the USA.

Professors Ignacio Arellano, Víctor García Ruiz, Pilar Latasa and Jesús María Usunáriz traveled to Rhode Island

The group of research Siglo de Oro (GRISO) of the University of Navarra, in partnership with the John Carter Brown Library and the department of programs of study Hispanic of Brown University, organized the International congress "Old World and New World in the Chronicles of the Indies", held during the first days of June in Providence, Rhode Island (USA).

Specialists from Spain, the U.S. and Peru participated in the meeting . Representing the University of Navarra were professors Ignacio Arellano, director of the GRISO; and Víctor García Ruiz, of the department of language and Literature, who presented a lecture on Juan Recio de León, discoverer of Chunchos and Paitite; and also professors Pilar Latasa and Jesús María Usunáriz, of the department of History, who spoke on chronicles and history in La Plata and chronicles on Europe from the Indies, respectively.

Portal on chronicles of the Indies at Library Services Virtual Cervantes

At the framework of congress, the John Carter Brown Library, a prestigious Library Services known internationally for its rich collection of documents on the Americas, offered the exhibition Spanish Historical Writing About the New World. This valuable collection of documents, consisting of editions of chronicles of the Indies and other materials related to American history, forms the basis of a thematic portal on chronicles that the GRISO will soon be developing.

agreement A few months ago, an agreement was reached with the Miguel de Cervantes VirtualLibrary Services to house this new portal. All the materials are currently being digitized. The page will undoubtedly constitute a fundamental tool for specialists and those interested in American topics and will join the institutional portal that the GRISO already has in the Library Services Virtual Cervantes(http://www.cervantesvirtual.com/portal/griso/).
