"The Internal Communications has gained special importance since the arrival of COVID-19 and its alliance with HR has been put in value. Companies have had to face a very complex crisis status and have put all their efforts to adapt and take care of the most important thing they have: people", said Roberto Cabezas, director of Career Services of the University of Navarra. Together with Francisco García Cabello, CEO and founder of Foro Recursos Humanos, he presented the event 'Internal Communications, the best ally', a meeting to reflect, debate and highlight good practices of Internal Communications and its alliance with HR in times of COVID-19.

More than 400 registered attendees were able to follow the event, which was held at the University of Navarra's postgraduate program headquarters in Madrid, via streaming

During the confinement, the Internal Communications was core topic for companies to maintain a sense of belonging. An urgent need arose for communication to flow transparently within organizations. Inmaculada Vela, Director of Internal Communications at EY; Blanca Zayas, Director of Communication at Uber; and Miguel Ruiz de Valbuena, director of Internal Communications at IBM, shared their experiences and reflections on the role that communication has played in their companies over the last year.

At EY, they developed numerous content and activities that kept their employees together despite the distance. "We were able to do many things because all the company's leaders bought into it and became great internal communicators themselves. Even the president himself participated in the challenges," commented Inmaculada Vela.

tool Blanca Zayas, for her part, stressed coherence and adaptability: "The Internal Communications has become a great source of cohesion, but partnership between Departments is essential. Everyone has to be aligned in terms of message and strategy. The core topic of the communicator is flexibility. You have to know how to adapt to the new times and explore all the new communication channels that are emerging". At IBM, they opted to go back to the "classic" to maintain that connection with employees. "It was an exceptional moment and allowed us to do the Internal Communications we had always wanted to do. We opted to create content of value and strip it of frills. Among other actions, we decided to send a daily e-mail from the president to all employees written from the staff", explained Miguel Ruiz de Valbuena, who also emphasized transparency: "It is important for employees to know what is happening at business. We have to be quick with fakenews and act quickly in the face of them".

Greg Burke, director of IESE Business School Communications, also participated in the event. "The Internal Communications and human resources together can create culture, cannot be improvised and have to dialogue with each other. Individuals, companies and society can have a positive impact on the world through professional excellence, integrity and a spirit of service," he added.

Focus on employees

"Communication is giving meaning to the purposethe brand. Companies with a post-covid future are companies guided by a purpose on which they build capacity for management, alliances and transformation. The Internal Communications is the core topic of that business of the future, which is built from the inside out, from the employees," said Angel Alloza, CEO of Corporate Excellence, who presented the second part of the workshop.

Mahou San Miguel and Beam Suntory, business sponsor, explained how in the period of confinement the focus was put more than ever on the employees, and how the difficulties of teleworking were overcome.

Alba Alcaide and Patricia de Blas, from Beam Suntory, emphasized that the main mission statement of the Internal Communications is to "establish human connections". "The Internal Communications and the business have to go hand in hand, they have to share objectives," they assured.

Sergio Guillermo, head of People Communication and Transversal Projects at Mahou San Miguel, explained how they had to deal with teleworking: "We thought it would be more flexible, but we realized that it generated dysfunctions, because the lines between conference were diluted and it was important to take care of life staff. So we decided to establish some common lines and to go all out for the care of people".
