Students María Canales and Ainhoa Sedano, third year Nursing students, have made part of the academic year (second semester) between the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the Glasgow Caledonian Universitythanks to an Erasmus program that this academic center maintains with the University of Navarra. University of Navarra.
In order to participate, the students had to pass a selection process with twenty other candidates, and demonstrate that they had the required level of English for the program, which consisted of eight practical weeks at the hospital and six theoretical weeks of class at the university.
In addition, during their stay in the United Kingdom, they took a module of management nursing in the field of pediatrics and participated in seminars. "The British system involves issue fewer hours of class than the Spanish one but more hours of work staff and in teams", they indicate.
12-hour shifts
They remember the experience as "formative and very enriching", as it has allowed them to get to know a healthcare system different from the Spanish one and a different culture. "We were able to reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of the way nurses work in the UK, and observe the different roles and functions of these professionals as well as the role of the student within the nursing team," they point out. "On the other hand, we had to adapt and did so successfully to the intense 12-hour shifts, 3 days a week."
Finally, they highlight the good reception they received and all the activities organized within the program of exchange in which 400 students participated.
