"In order to lead a healthy life, it is also necessary to distribute food intake at the right time. Eating more meals a day is better, but without neglecting breakfast because it is an unavoidable meal," said Alfredo Martínez, professor and Full Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the University of Navarra, on the occasion of the 2011 DuPont Science Award, which recognizes his scientific contributions to the treatment and prevention of obesity.

Martínez also pointed out that it is being discovered that"the content of proteins or carbohydrates in the dinner meal can be very important when it comes to the feeling of appetite the following morning", at final, "to ensure that everyone has four or five meals according to their needs and on a regular basis", as the expert pointed out.

Regarding hyperprotein diets and "miracle diets", Martínez warned about their danger and invited to be wary of them. According to the award winner, the best way to lose weight is to follow the two recommendations of the Asturian doctor and researcher , Francisco Grande Covián, which are: "less plate and more shoe" and "there is no food that is not fattening but that which remains on the plate".

It should be recalled that the jury of the award unanimously decided to award this award to Alfredo Martínez "for his scientific contributions, both basic and applied, on the mechanisms involved in the regulation of weight and excessive accumulation of fat in the human body and on the implementation of strategies aimed at the prevention and treatment of obesity". The jury also valued his high scientific impact in the areas of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics.

Researching
Alfredo Martínez is Full Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the University of Navarra. His academic responsibilities include directing since 1998 the special line "Obesity and Nutrition" of this university and co-directing the high school of Food Sciences. In addition, he directs the European Master's Degree in Food, Nutrition and Metabolism and, since 2008, he is director scientific associate of the INIA Center for Food Quality in Soria.

He has also directed distance learning courses on Nutrition and Health (since 1994), is Full Professor of the University of the Basque Country, has been Senior Associate Professor of the University of Santiago and did his post doctorate at the University of Nottingham.

Alfredo Martinez is currently a member of the Council International Union of Nutritional Sciencies and advisor of the European Union on academic and nutrition-related issues, of the high school European Food Science (IEFS, Dublin) and of the Fundaçao Portuguesa de Universidades and a member of the ILSI scientific committee for Europe.

Other positions
She has held, among other positions, the presidency of the Spanish Federation of Nutrition, Food and Dietetics Societies (FESNAD), from 2005 to 2010, and the administrative office of the European Federation of Nutrition Societies. He has also been a member of the Scientific committee of the Spanish Nutrition Foundation and is director of the Chair Tomás Pascual Sanz.

He has received numerous awards from his professional sector, has published more than 400 articles in the field of obesity, nutritional surveys and public health, evaluation of nutritional status and food intolerance, has participated with more than 100 communications in national and international congresses, has written more than 50 book chapters and has intervened as an invited speaker in more than 100 national and international forums.
