'National Geographic Magazine' and 'NYTimes.com' win award Peter Sullivan of the Malofiej Infographics Awards

1,356 papers from 29 countries participated in the competition, held at the University of Navarra.

National Geographic Magazine and NYTimes.com (USA) have been awarded the Peter Sullivan/Best of Show awards at the 19th edition of the Malofiej Awards for journalistic infographics. This competition is organized by the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SNDE) and is held at the University of Navarra.

The international jury, which met at School of Communication of the academic center from March 20 to 23, awarded National Geographic Magazine the maximum award in print version, for its graphic 'Gulf of Mexico'; while NYTimes.com obtained the same award in the online category for the work 'How Mariano Rivera Dominates Hitters'.

A total of 1,356 entries from 151 entries from 29 countries were submitted for the awards, considered the 'Pulitzer' of infographics. The jury awarded 8 gold, 25 silver and 77 bronze medals in the two categories: 71 corresponded to printed works (5 gold, 16 silver and 50 bronze medals) and 39 to online (3 gold, 9 silver and 27 bronze medals).

The most awarded media were National Geographic Magazine and NYTimes.com, with two gold medals each. The Washington Post, Público (Spain), In Graphics (Germany) and Estadao.com.br (Brazil) also won gold medals.

The award Miguel Urabayen award for best map also went to National Geographic Magazine for its work 'World of Rivers'. This award was instituted six years ago in honor of Visual Communication professor and film critic Miguel Urabayen, linked from the beginning to journalistic infographics and the Malofiej awards. Urabayen 'discovered' cartographer Alejandro Malofiej in Argentina and saw in him a pioneer of the genre that has undoubtedly revolutionized the print media in the last decade.

In its report, the School of Communication of the University of Navarra instituted the awards and the World Infographics Summit, which every year turns Pamplona for a week into the world capital of infographics by bringing together the most outstanding professionals from all over the world.

The awards were presented during the closing ceremony of the 19th Malofiej World Infographics Summit, which brought together more than 110 professionals from around the world and also served to present the Malofiej 18 volume, which includes all the winning entries from the 2010 edition, as well as various articles and interviews.
