Promote the development of the countries from the research

More than fifty international experts participated in the IV Development Week of the Navarra Center for International Development, held on June 1 and 2 at IESE Business School in Madrid.

More than fifty experts from institutions and academic centers of international renown attended quotation at the IV Development Weeka congress organized by the Navarra Center for International Development (NCID) on June 1 and 2 at IESE Business School in Madrid.

Speakers came from organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Bank development and the Center for Global Development - the leading U.S. think tank on poverty and economic growth - as well as campus from the U.S., U.K., France and Spain.

A total of 12 research papers were presented on various aspects related to Economics of development. Some of the papers focused on incentives to improve the academic performance or nutrition of children in countries at development -future human capital of the countries-, the quality of teaching in day care centers in the most disadvantaged nations, the resilience of markets in the face of the global crisis or monetary policies in an interdependent world.

The first workshop focused on the topic of human capital and development from a microeconomics perspective, with a more social and anthropological approach . Speakers included Jere Behrman, professor at the University of Pennsylvania (USA), who has worked at the World Bank, the Inter-American Bank development and the United Nations Development Program development; and Pedro Carneiro, researcher of high school of programs of study Taxes (UK), professor at University College London and economist at the Centre for Microdata Methods and Practice (CEMMAP).

The second day addressed macroeconomic issues in countries at development, a research field focused on how macroeconomic values can positively or negatively influence the growth of countries.

Speakers included Sebastian Edwards, Full Professor of Economics International at the University of California-Los Angeles, co-director of the National Bureau of Economic Research's 'Africa Project' and former chief economist for Latin America at the World Bank; and Liliana Rojas-Suárez, economist at the Center for Global Development, consultant to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and administrative office General Iberoamericana, and president of committee Latin American Financial Affairs (CLAF).

Scientific solutions to situations of extreme poverty

The NCID is a group of research committed to the search for scientific solutions -viable and sustainable- to situations of extreme poverty in countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To achieve this, it focuses on three areas: the quality of public and private institutions in each nation, technology transfer and migration. It belongs to the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), the research center at Humanities and social sciences of the University of Navarra.
