The Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia, in its international scientific competition, has awarded the award Cinfa 2017 to three researchers from the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition of the University of Navarra: Concepción Tros de Ilarduya (professor at department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology), Laura Blanco (who is currently researching at the CIMA University of Navarra) and Mercedes Fructuoso.

The three scientists presented in the competition the work carried out to design new pharmaceutical formulations based on nanotechnology and aimed at the treatment of cancer through gene therapy strategies.

Aimed at promoting research activities, the competition recognized the usefulness of this work to obtain nanometer-sized formulations that, in the presence of therapeutic genes, can be used to solve some of the problems of lack of efficacy of these systems to treat cancer.

As Professor Tros de llarduya explains, "the formulations contain lipids and/or cationic polymers that are capable of transporting the therapeutic agent to the cell or organ of interest, thus improving efficacy and reducing the side effects that these compounds sometimes have".

The act of submission of award took place at the Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia, in Madrid.
