The classroom Magna of the University of Navarra hosted one of the most traditional events in university life, the investiture of the doctors who have achieved the maximum academic Degree in this academic year. They are 152 new doctors who received the doctor's cap from the hands of Vice President Luis Herrera.

Colleagues from School, family members and professors accompanied the new doctors in this ceremony that the University of Navarra celebrates every year on the first Friday of June. Thirteen Schools were represented at the ceremony with their new doctors. Philosophy and Letters and Medicine contributed 25 doctors each; Pharmacy, 18; Sciences, 16; Law, 13; Communication, 12; Theology, 12; Engineering, 11; Economics, 7; Ecclesiastics of Philosophy, 6; IESE, 3; Architecture, 2; and Canon Law, 2. Forty-four percent of the new doctors are women.

In this course, the sponsor of the graduating class of doctors was Professor Modesto Santos, from the EcclesiasticalSchool Philosophy , who reminded those present that "the Degree doctorate is not an award for services rendered, but a starting point that enables you to assume functions that you have to put at the service of others".

"As men and women of your time you are called to write history day by day, page after page with your work presided over and informed by the love of truth, that truth present behind any dimension of reality, however insignificant it may seem and which you have tried to unveil in the various branches of knowledge that you have made the object of your research".

The truth is not afraid to be known, but to be forgotten.

Going deeper into this idea, Professor Santos asked his sponsored children never to be afraid of the truth: "The truth does not fear to be known, what it fears is to be forgotten, marginalized, sacrificed for the sake of interests alien to the good that the knowledge of the truth provides by itself. I would dare to say that the main problem of our time is the oblivion of truth inspired by the distrust of the power of intelligence to reach it. The constant cultivation of that field of knowledge in which today you reach the highest academic rank will be your best response and contribution to our society, so much in need of wisdom for the correct use, at the integral service of man, of its great achievements in the field of science and technology".

For his part, Alejandro Rivas Nieto , PhD in Engineering, thanked the University of Navarra, on behalf of his colleagues, for the financial aid received to reach doctorate. "Our harvest, that of each one of us, consists of a tiny but honest and transparent precious stone capable of being inserted into a magnificent and great puzzle called wisdom".

The ceremony concluded with a speech by speech from Vice President Luis Herrera, who congratulated the new doctors and mentioned the purpose of intellectual work: "The university task requires a deep and constant inquiry into reality, an endeavor that, if undertaken with courage and honesty, commits one's whole life and makes the ideal of truth a noble aspiration worth sacrificing for.

The presence of professors from different Schools gave rise to the Vice President to talk about the multidisciplinarity, so fashionable today, but already mentioned in the Partidas of Alfonso X the Wise. "There are many initiatives in the fields of both research and teaching that are leading us towards the community of knowledge, but challenge is not easy. What is at stake is the ability to have an overall vision of the person and society that allows us to fully integrate the truths of our own scientific field".
