Carlos Huesa, professor at School of Sciences, has received the academic distinction "Best in Physics", in the category of "Therapy", as one of the best scientific communications at the AAPM Annual Meeting & Exhibition, one of the most important congresses on Medical Physics, organized every year by the association American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Huesa will have to present his research in the next edition of congress, to be held in Houston (Texas) from July 23 to 27.

"This award means that the research I am doing is on the right track, and it motivatesme to continue in this way, with humility and work" says the teacher.

Carlos is doing a two-year postdoctoral stay at the department of radiation oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital(Harvard Medical School). His research is in the field of Medical Physics, specifically in radioembolization treatments for liver cancer. The goal of this research is to develop a model to predict the spatial distribution of microspheres in the liver and the radiation dose in both tumor and healthy tissue.

"In these treatments, radioactive microspheres are injected - by means of a catheter - through the hepatic artery, with the goal to embolize the blood vessels that supply the tumor and emit local radiation to eradicate it."

Carlos Huesa is sample satisfied with the application internship of his research and hopes that the model he is developing will serve to make better clinical decisions in the future.
