The Royal and Generalfile of Navarre hosts until next August 17 the exhibition "Insults of another time. Navarra, XVI-XVII centuries". The sample is curated by Jesús M. Usunáriz, Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Navarra; Cristina Tabernero, professor of Spanish language at the University of Navarra; and Javier Ruiz, teaching assistant doctor of Library Science and Documentation at the University of Coruña and doctor by our University. The opening ceremony, held on April 16, was attended by the Regional Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rebeca Esnaola, and the General director of Culture, Ignacio Apezteguia.

"Insults of another time" gathers 57 documents, selected from more than 6,000 judicial processes related to insults, mostly from the judicial processes initiated before the Royal Courts and preserved in the Royal and General file of Navarre. Thus, it offers an in-depth look at the offensive language of the time, revealing the social norms and cultural values of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The exhibition is structured around three sections: the legality and defense of honor in the courts; the forms of expression of insults (written, oral and gestural); and the social context of these offenses, including references to sexual behavior, religion, race and social class . Among the materials on display are procedural documents, such as lawsuits and judgments, and historical texts.

Professors Usunáriz and Tabernero have devoted years to the study of insults in the Golden Age, culminating in the publication of the"Diccionario de injurias de los siglos XVI y XVII", which compiles more than a thousand terms and expressions, accompanied by definitions, etymological and grammatical information, and more than 1,800 documentary testimonies.
