"The model of development tourist has to be coherent with the model of development urban . We must first think about the needs of the citizens; if they live comfortably in their city, visitors will also enjoy it". Iñaki Gaztelumendi, ex director of the municipal tourism business of Santiago de Compostela, pronounced these words today on the occasion of his intervention in the X Forum of Humanities of the University of Navarra. The School of Philosophy and Letters has organized this year's edition under the degree scroll "Humanities and Cultural Tourism".

According to the expert, the most successful tourist destinations from the point of view of development cultural are those capable of creating a tourist product: "It is not enough to have top quality tourist resources; you also have to develop projects that can be marketed".

For his part, Professor Juan José Pons, from department of Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Navarra, highlighted the great potential of cultural tourism to transform spaces and societies. "It has the capacity to dynamize other sectors such as hotels, commerce, transport, etc. In addition, it plays a very important role in the recovery and maintenance of cultural and artistic heritage and also has other advantages such as bringing people together," he said.

12 cultural tourism experts

In the X Forum of Humanities, held today at the University of Navarra, 12 experts are participating, including Carlos Erce, director general of Tourism and Promotion of the Government of Navarra, who participated in the roundtable "Cultural Tourism Initiatives in Navarra"; or LLuís Bonet, director of doctoral program in management of Culture and Heritage of the University of Barcelona.

In addition to the conferences and round tables that take place along the workshop, among the events planned is the submission awards of the contest "Stories of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Navarra", organized by the Forum, and a benefit concert for Haiti, at position of the choir and orchestra of the academic center.

The Forum of Humanities of the University of Navarra is an initiative of the School of Philosophy and Letters that aims, among other things, to discuss the importance of the Humanities for society and to put the students of the licentiate degree in dialogue with professionals of the business, the management cultural, the media and the institutions.
