José Calabuig: "A runner in the running of the bulls is a miniature athlete".

The cardiologist of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra closed the XVI meeting of the Spanish Society of Nutrition at the University of Navarra, addressing the necessary preparation for elite sports.

On the occasion of the closing of the XVI meeting of the Sp anish So ciety of Nutrition at the University of Navarra, José Calabuig, a specialist in cardiology and sports medicine at the University of Navarra and professor of the European University Clínica Universidad de Navarra and professor of the Master's Degree European University in Food, Nutrition and Metabolism (E-MENU), affirmed that "a runner in the running of the bulls is a miniature athlete", in relation to the physical preparation, dietary and rest patterns involved in running in the Sanfermines."The stress of the bull and of the status alarm that it creates, produce elasticity and speed in the runner", something that together with "adequate nutrition makes it possible to reach the maximum performance potential", continued the expert.

The same happens with elite athletes such as cyclists, a sport that was the subject of the closing lecture . Coinciding with the start of the Tour de France, Dr. Calabuig -who treated Miguel Induraín during his degree program as a professional sportsman-, considers that"for the start of this competition, cyclists are at the best moment of their training". A training with the peculiarity of demanding "a daily millimetric nutrition", since "an inadequate per diem expenses can turn an outstanding cyclist into a mediocre one".

Conclusions on nutrition

The XVI meeting of the Spanish Society of Nutrition was attended by 250 international experts. With the slogan"Nutrition and exercise: vital healthy binomial" they have addressed the following topics: food and sports, physical activity and health, healthy behaviors, nutrition and lifestyle, per diem expenses Mediterranean and health. Some of the conclusions of congress are: the possible future of genetic doping, the need for athletes to take care of their natural hydration balance to maintain their performance, how the enjoyment of exercise internship enhances its health benefits, the moderate intake of certain foods -such as beer- can improve the immune and cardiovascular system and the interrelation of several sedentary behavior patterns to the detriment of health, especially in children and adolescents (relationship of short sleep, watching a lot of television and increased food intake with obesity).
