Economics team places fourth in the SDS International Business Case Competition Queenstown

The team is formed by Daniel del Pozo, Eric Laqueche, María Alexandra Raffo, Mercedes Trejo and Professor Ian Kwan.

Daniel del Pozo, Eric Laqueche, María Alexandra Raffo and Mercedes Trejo, together with their coach and professor Ian Kwan, from School , have placed fourth after participating in the final of the SDS International Business Case Competition Queenstown held in New Zealand.

The Case Competition team from School was the only European representation in New Zealand, where they competed against 11 groups from universities in Australia, Canada, the United States and New Zealand. Coach and professor Ian Kwan highlighted the progress of the students throughout the cases: "Not only have they demonstrated English as good as their native speakers, but they have also excelled in their skill analysis, critical thinking, summary and exhibition. This sample that our students are among the best in the world".

The SDS International Business Case Competition Queenstown, organized by the University of Otago, is the fourth Case Competition in which the Case Competition Club has participated this year. Concordia University, University of Florida, and UNICC itself have served as experience and preparation for the School team. Mercedes Trejo, a 6th year Bilingual Law and Business Administration student and team member, also highlights the preparation received in the classes: "Being able to participate in a case competition is an opportunity to put into internship everything learned during the degree program in an unknown environment, such as the New Zealand market. It has been a real challenge challenge to compete in an environment different from ours, but finally the effort invested during degree program and the preparation for the competition have paid off".

Throughout this week, the four students have faced two five-hour cases and an Elevator Pitch. In the latter test, the students placed first in their division. "We scored enough points to get into the final and compete against Ivey Business School, the University of Canterbury and Auckland University of Technology. It was amazing to make it to the finals," notes Professor Kwan.

Students value the SDS International Business Case Competition as an opportunity to learn about other cultures and acquire new skills. Daniel del Pozo, student of 4th year Economics and Bilingual Law considers the experience as "totally enriching both professionally and academically. You learn a lot: working under pressure, working in a team, handling audiences, etc. financial aid to develop a lot of skills necessary not only in the world of consultancy service, but in any profession", emphasizes del Pozo.

Eric Laqueche, student , a 6th year ADE and Bilingual Law student and team member, highlights the chance to meet new people that the competition has given him: "We came here with four students and a coach, and now we're going home with many friends from all over the world. At the end of the day, we are not only competing with students from the best universities, we are also learning from them and enjoying ourselves with them". María Alexandra Raffo, a 4th year student of Economics and Bilingual Law, highlights the opportunity to get to know another culture in a professional environment: "After these four days in Queenstown, I am convinced that a case competition is a unique experience, where you really 'live' the world of business, and acquire skills that will help you in your professional future".

Shanghai, Sydney and Santiago de Chile are the next destinations for Mercedes, Daniel, Eric and Maria Alexandra, where they will continue with classes at their universities at exchange.
