Cinfa and the research center in Nutrition of the University of Navarra reaffirm their commitment to innovation in this field with the renewal of their agreement of partnership, in force since 2013. This new agreement will allow both organizations to continue working on prevention at subject nutrition, as well as on the identification of new therapeutic targets for the treatment of obesity and obesity-associated pathologies.

According to data of the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a global health problem that affects more than 500 million people and whose prevalence has almost doubled in the last thirty years. And data is particularly alarming with regard to the younger generations: issue of children and adolescents between the ages of five and 19 who are obese has increased tenfold worldwide in the last four decades.

Although nowadays we have much more information about health and nutrition, the current lifestyle, often marked by haste, has led to a progressivewithdrawal of the Mediterranean per diem expenses , and to an increase in the consumption of processed foods. This implies a higher intake of calories, saturated fats, sugars and salt or sodium, to the detriment of fruits, fresh vegetables and other sources of fiber. As a result, WHO warns that overweight and obesity could become the pandemic of 2030.

"The most worrying thing is that a poor diet can not only lead us to become overweight or obese, it also increases the chances of suffering from other cardiovascular diseases, bone diseases and even some cancers," explains Dr. Alicia López de Ocáriz, Director of research and development at Cinfa. "The good news, however, is that many of these consequences can be prevented," she adds.

In this sense, the laboratory and the research body of the University of Navarra, a pioneer at international level, are making great advances, both in the development of markers to determine the susceptibility to suffer from obesity or pathologies associated with it, and in personalized treatments -dietary or nutraceutical- and their individualized response, among other lines of action.

Alfredo Martínez, director scientist of the research center in Nutrition (CIN) of the University of Navarra and researcher of the network CIBEROBN, highlights its promotion "of projects with a high competitive value and that allow progress in the development of Precision Nutrition and Personalized Nutrition".

"For our part," concludes Dr. López de Ocáriz, "we are committed to health prevention and innovation as the cornerstone for meeting future challenges." "With this agreement, we hope to contribute to the acquisition of healthy eating habits and the early diagnosis of associated diseases, as well as helping to define personalized and precision treatment."
