The project 'Public discourse' of the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra organizes on February 16 and 17 the international workshop 'Metaphors, emotions and identity'.

The goal of the activity is to analyze the role of metaphors and emotions in the construction of individual and collective identities. It focuses on a wide range of data from Public discourse (political, institutional and media) to academic genres, personal narratives or film speech .

The event will feature speakers from academic centers in the UK, Switzerland and Spain. Elena Semino, from Lancaster University, will speak on 'Metaphors, emotions and identities in online interactions related to healthcare'. She will present the results of her study on the metaphors used by people affected by cancer and healthcare professionals.

Cristina Soriano, from the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences, will give the session 'Interdisciplinary approaches to the study of emotion, metaphor and identity'. Soriano will explain how metaphors interrelate and influence cultures and identities.

The third speaker is Carmen Sancho Guinda, from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and her lecture is entitled 'Under the magnifying glass of academic metaphor: crossing modes, genres and experience'. The researcher will defend the importance of teaching in the higher Education on the use of metaphor, given its pragmatic potential.

Short presentations and training sessions data

In addition to these lectures, there will be three short presentations at position by ICS researchers: 'Metaphor and self-knowledge in adolescent narratives', by Sofía Brotóns; 'Spatial metaphors in cinematic flashbacks: the past in front of the character', by Adriana Gordejuela; and 'Metaphorical representations of palliative care in the Spanish press', by Inés Olza and Carla Reigada.

There will also be two sessions at data. Marie Curie researcher Sarali Gintsburg will speak on her project, ORFORCREA, and Saqlain Hassan, on a question framed in her doctoral thesis , the representation of Muslim women in the British and Pakistani press.

This meeting is part of the research MetaforUN forum on metaphor, speech and creativity, developed by the project 'Public discourse' of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) and funded by the research Plan of the University of Navarra (PIUNA).
