"Reading comprehension is the result of the interaction between decoding and language comprehension."

Dr. Milagros Tapia defended her thesis on the simple conception of reading in Spanish.

"La concepción simple de la lectura en español: predictores de la comprensión lectora en student body de primer y tercer curso de primaria" was the degree scroll of the thesis defended by Milagros Mónica Tapia Montesinos, PhD, on May 2. This doctoral thesis has been presented at the School of Education and Psychology and directed and co-directed by Dr. Gerardo Aguado Alonso and Dr. Juan Cruz Ripoll Salceda, respectively.

According to Tapia, her line of research has focused on studying the simple view of reading, a model which states that reading comprehension is the result of the interaction between decoding and language comprehension. She also pointed out that the main goal of her thesis was to determine whether the Simple View of Reading would be a model applicable to 1st and 3rd year students of language Spanish.

This study was carried out among Peruvian students in Lima, the capital city of the doctor's home country . "With my research I intend to offer a contribution to the educational research , since there is a lack of studies, especially longitudinal studies, of reading comprehension in Spanish", explained Tapia. "Besides - she added - it is a challenge staff and professional to be able to transfer these results to the public sector educational in Peru".

Finally, according to the data collected in this thesis , it has been concluded that decoding is a better predictor of reading comprehension in first grade and language comprehension in third grade. Likewise, the relationship between decoding, reading comprehension and language comprehension changes as the subject strengthens his/her reading skill .
