DATAI celebrates the defense of its first thesis

The Institute of data Science data Artificial Intelligence (DATAI) reached a historic milestone on December 4 with the defense of its first thesis completed entirely at the institute. The work, graduate Data Selection for Measurement-Constrained Statistical Learning, was presented by Álvaro Cía Mina, researcher area and a member of the institute since its inception.

The thesis supervised by Jesús López Fidalgo and Chiara Tommasi, focuses on the development efficient data selection methods data training statistical and machine learning models in contexts where obtaining measurements or labels is costly. Their contribution combines Active Learning techniques with principles of design experiment design to identify which observations are truly informative, thereby reducing computational cost and the need for data .

During the defense—held in the classroom Gamesa classroom at the University of Navarra—Cía presented the main results of his research, which include new mathematical formulations for evaluating the informational utility of data, subsampling strategies applicable to different scenarios, and validations in real environments, such as the CRM models used in phase I clinical trials. The panel was composed of Licesio Rodríguez Aragón, José Antonio Moler Cuiral, and M.ª Jesús Rivas López.
