From Zarautz (Gipuzkoa) to the United Arab Emirates
Jorge Pabesio, former ISSA student , General Manager Public Relations at Europe Emirates Group
Jorge Pabesio finished the Degree in attendance in 2013. His restlessness, willingness and desire to learn have led him since then to seek his place as an assistant in different companies and destinations until landing in Dubai, where he currently holds the position of General Manager Public Relations at Europe Emirates Group.
He speaks Spanish, Basque, English and French and is gradually improving with Arabic, language which he would like to speak or at least understand over time.
Her professional experience began at Hogan Lovells with the curricular internship of Degree at attendance de Dirección, in Madrid, in January 2013.
How do you remember this first stage?
I had the opportunity to work in one of the most important law firms in the world with excellent professionals from whom I learned many things that theory does not teach you. It was my first contact with the corporate world and it gave me a great base and a powerful impulse for my professional future. From Hogan Lovells I took with me some very good memories and good friends.
Those months in Madrid were the warm-up for what has come later, with your first stop in London. What goal did you go there with?
My main goal was to continue my education; it seemed essential to me to do a Master's Degree before launching myself into the job market. I always liked events and I thought I was good at communicating, so I decided to study event management. On the other hand, London is one of the capitals of the world, so I took into account the importance of doing a higher programs of study there and at a university like Birkbeck.
London opened my eyes a lot, studying with native people and being in a completely different environment forced me to adapt faster to the new status. Undoubtedly, one of the best experiences. It was the first city where I started working (officially) in a totally cosmopolitan and frenetic environment.
In March 2014 you started working at ITSPR as Account Executive. How did you arrive at business? What are your duties?
You could say that studying in London opened the doors to the London job market for me. I started at ITSPR as a sales and marketing assistant for a three-month internship. At the end of the term, they decided to hire me and promoted me to the position of Account Executive, where I was in charge of marketing and event sales.
I had access to a wide range of prestigious international clients. This helped me to know how to negotiate, work with and adapt to all subject of profile important clients.
What motivated you to leave London for the UAE?
Dubai was always a dream and a goal that I had in my mind, I always wanted to be in the city where I am today meeting. So when the time came, and after consulting with my family, I decided not to continue in London and to launch an adventure in Dubai.
After some time looking for work from Spain, a friend who lives in Dubai told me that it was very difficult to get work there without going there physically. So, I packed my bags and went to Dubai. I visited different companies and after two weeks I started to receive calls and interviews; after a month I already had different offers. I knew that entering the Emirati market was not easy, so I took the first attractive offer that came my way: an events agency.
My time at NOMAD EVENTS was brief, it was what is known in Dubai as a 'stepping stone' business . I started as Events Coordinator and I was in charge of organizing already planned events as well as developing new projects based on the client's budget .
In order to continue to grow, you decide to switch to Europe Emirates Group.
That's right, Europe Emirates Group is an international signature dedicated to establish tax efficient commercial Structures all over the world; such as, for example, Structures of Free Trade Zone companies, Offshore companies, international banking and trust services, residency program and citizenship programs globally, business brokerage, yacht registration, etc.
A unique opportunity presented itself; it was the leap I was waiting for and, fortunately, it came soon. I am currently the Senior Client Relationship Manager at signature and I am in charge of sales, negotiations and advising my clients with their commercial, fiscal and financial Structures .
What would you highlight about Dubai's culture or way of working?
The way of working in Dubai is totally different from Europe, especially working with Arabs and Asian people in general. The first thing you learn in Dubai is to be more patient.
As for life there, what surprised me most was the luxury and the huge skyscrapers. Everything is done in a big way -Dubai has the tallest skyscraper in the world, the largest shopping mall in the world, the only 7-star hotel in the world...-. I was also surprised by the great security in public places, -there is hardly any crime- and that, unlike most Arab countries, their culture is absolutely respectful of Western culture.
Throughout your career, what have the companies on your profile valued the most?
Professionalism and commitment. Two essential values in any professional. Together with the desire to improve, learn and a positive attitude, they make everything in life possible.
What languages do you use on a daily basis?
In Dubai the official language is English along with Arabic, but obviously daily life and business is conducted in English - 90% of Dubai's population are expatriates, only 10% are locals.
How has studying at ISSA helped your career?
I studied at ISSA because I considered it essential to be trained in various aspects of business (you never know where you're going to end up...) and I am very grateful and proud to be part of this School.
Both Degree at attendance and the University of Navarra have helped me to prepare a strong base for my future and in relation to my personal qualities. I believe that every student graduate from UNAV is very well prepared for all markets.
