The University awards three new Gold Medals

They are professors Pilar Sesma and Jesús Prieto, and the former Director of Nursing at the Clinic, María Ángeles Sánchez.

Chancellor Javier Echevarría, has awarded the Gold Medal of the University of Navarra to professors Pilar Sesma and Jesús Prieto, and to the former Director of Nursing of the Clinic, María Ángeles Sánchez. With these, 25 Gold Medals have been awarded since 1990, in special recognition of services rendered to the University. The ceremony of the submission will be held on February 19, 2016 in the Hall of Degrees of Central Building.

María Pilar Sesma Egózcue (Pamplona, 1950) has a degree and PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Navarra. She obtained the place as full professor of Cell Biology at the University of Valencia in 1977 and as full professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1983. She was the youngest professor in Spain in her area and the first Navarrese student of the University of Navarra to obtain a university Chair .

Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Navarra from 1984 to 2015, she was dean of the School of Sciences between 1990 and 2005, and assistant to the Vice Rectorate of academic staff between 2007 and 2012. She was also at position of the department of Histology and Anatomy Pathology for 20 years. She has directed 23 thesis of licentiate degree and 12 doctoral thesis , and has participated in 18 projects of research. She is the author of 82 scientific publications.

The Full Professor Jesús María Prieto Valtueña (Oviedo, 1944) joined the University of Navarra in 1979, where he has been Professor of General Pathology, director of the department of Internal Medicine of the University Clinic and director of the area of Hepatology and Gene Therapy of the University of Navarra, where he has been Professor of General Pathology, of the of Internal Medicine of the University Clinic and of the of Hepatology and Gene Therapy of the University of Navarra. CIMA. He passed to the status of Full Professor emeritus in 2014.

He is the author of more than 300 original articles of research in international journals, director of more than 50 doctoral thesis and promoter of pioneering clinical trials for the treatment of liver cirrhosis and, in the field of gene therapy, liver and digestive tumors. He has been president of the association Española para el Estudio del Hígado and member of the committee publishing house of numerous international journals of the specialization program.

 honorary doctor by the Universities of Oporto (Portugal) and Austral (Argentina), he has received distinctions such as the Gran award Bial and the award "Asturian of the Year" (2006). In 2013 he was awarded the "Recognition Award" of the association European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and in 2014 the award Nacional de research in the area of Medicine "Gregorio Marañón".

María Ángeles Sánchez Bellón (Úbeda, Jaén, 1948) has a degree in Nursing with specialization program at operating room, and Master's Degree of management and Administration in Nursing. She was Director of Nursing at Clínica Universidad de Navarra between 1980 and 2003. During this period her activity was focused on promote a qualitative change in the Clinic's nursing and on promoting the training of the supervisors and the development of the nursing and auxiliary staff .

She then held the position of position supervisor of the area de Selección and training, until 2008, and since then she has been director of area de Selección. She has been president of the group of work for training permanent of Supervisors, as well as board member of the Specialties Commission and board member for Navarra of the association National Nursing Managers. She has participated in more than 30 courses and congresses, and has made work visits to hospitals in the USA and Brussels.
