Two researchers from the University of Navarra receive the Ortiz de Landázuri and Mikel Larumbe grants awarded by the department of Health of the Government of Navarra.

Twelve other research projects of the academic center have received financial aid from the regional government.

Mª José Blanco, researcher at department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology of the University of Navarra, has received the scholarship Ortiz de Landázuri, awarded by the department of Health of the Government of Navarra and endowed with 52,000 euros. The project that he directs, in which a dozen researchers participate, tries to develop drugs in the form of nanoparticles that, thanks to their size, can only access tumors without reaching healthy cells.

A runner-up prize was also awarded to Xabier Agirre, researcher of the area of Oncology of the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA ) of the University of Navarra, for the project "Analysis of epigenetic alterations in leukemia-initiating cells in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia"; and another to José Luis Lanciego, researcher of the area of Neurology, also of the University of Navarra. CIMAfor the project: "Characterization of gene expression patterns in the paleo-thalamic pathway in the model of primate Parkinson's disease".

On the other hand, the scholarship Mikel Larrumbe to the best project of research referred to area of development of the health system has been awarded to Cristina Oroviogoicoechea, researcher of the School of Nursing of the University of Navarra, for the project: "design and assessment of a nursing intervention for the care of the mouth in hospitalized oncology patients". The scholarship is endowed with 8,550 euros.

Grants for 20 new projects

In total, in 2009, the regional government awarded grants to twenty research projects in the field of health sciences, out of a total of 77 that were submitted to the call for proposals. In addition to those already mentioned, another ten of these projects will be carried out at the University of Navarra:

- research on childhood obesity (Amelia Martí del Moral)
- research on nutritional control and Education (Mª Ángeles Zulet)
- research on smoking cessation (Natividad Canga)
- research on the diagnosis of obesity (Javier Gómez)
- research on lung cancer (Fernando Lecanda and Mª Isabel Zudaire) - - on colorectal cancer (Jesús García Foncillas - Jesús García Foncillas) CIMA)
- research on colorectal cancer (Jesús García Foncillas - CIMA)
- research on analysis in cerebral infarction (José María Hermida - CIMA)
- research on Parkinson's Disease (Elisa Mengual and Manuel Alegre - CIMA)

The ceremony of submission of the grants to the principal investigators of each project took place at the Hospital de Navarra and was presided over by María Kutz, Minister of Health of the Government of Navarra, and Isabel Martín, Director of Health, among other health personalities.
