Ramón Salaverría (COM'93 | PhD'98), Full Professor of Journalism, and former student and journalist, Silvia Intxaurrondo (COM'01), discussed the effects that the digital transformation of communication is having on society.

About two hundred alumni were given quotation last Wednesday, May 10, in the Alumni building of the University in Madrid to reflect on the digital transformation of communication with Full Professor Journalism, Ramón Salaverría (COM'93 | PhD'98), and the co-director and presenter of La Hora de La 1 (TVE), Silvia Intxaurrondo (COM'01).

The Alumni Meeting began with the presentation of the University's Strategy 2025 at position by Ángel Gómez Montoro, director of campus Madrid, in which he explained its backbone: Education transforming, research with impact and focus and interdisciplinary university.

Afterwards, the experts discussed the digital transformation of communication under degree scroll . "We have never been in a context in which we are able to receive so much information, so quickly and immediately, and send it through multiple channels, to a massive audience and also being able to fragment the information," said Intxaurrondo. He added that "the receiver is no longer passive, but responds and demands that this response is reflected in the media. This is an unprecedented status , and I think it is time to stop and reflect on the transformation we are undergoing". The alumni of the School of Communication added that "the only thing that has not changed is the official document of journalist" and optimistically added that "the digital transformation gives us the opportunity to have a greater impact on the receiver". Silvia concluded by saying that "we find ourselves in a complex context but full of opportunities".

For his part, the Full Professor explained what the line of work "Society and Digital Communication" of the University's Strategy 2025 consists of: "We start from the premise that communication in societies has to be sustainable in order to achieve a balance. Its digitalization has given rise to an environment with great imbalances, as numerous actors have appeared who have acquired a lot of influence, thus causing great confusion and problems in society." Salaverría explained that the goal of his research is "to understand these phenomena, dimension them and propose ideas to solve the problems they cause, always putting people at the center of his work ."

The speakers talked about disinformation and Salaverría shared three keys to combat it. Firstly, the development of a legislation that regulates this status that until now did not exist; secondly, the use of technology, to which he added that "technology does not end up solving the problems that it itself has generated, so technology alone is not enough". And finally, Salaverría spoke of Education as "a fundamental resource to form a citizenry with criteria and capable of confronting harmful content".

The speakers also reflected on artificial intelligence. In this regard, Silvia said that "it can be a very useful resource that could help us save a lot of time" and added that "it scares us, but we will detect the opportunities it offers us". For his part, the researcher announced that the School of Communication will offer, starting next year, the subject Artificial Intelligence in Journalism, focusing on its purpose, and not so much on the tool itself.

After analyzing the current status , they talked about the future of the media, to which the journalist assured that "we know that we have to adapt to a very changing scenario and we must try to ensure that the official document does not suffer", and added that "universities will help us thanks to your long-term vision deadline and your deepening of the official document".

The University of Navarra will continue to present its Strategy 2025 to alumni at the Alumni Meetings in Malaga (May 25), Miami (June 17) and Boston (June 22).
