The Professor Emeritus of the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition of the University of Navarra Joaquín del Río passed away last Monday, July 9, at the age of 81, after a long fight against cancer.

Born in Tangier in 1937 and resident in Madrid, Professor del Río, a pharmacist and chemist from training, started his scientific degree program at committee Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid (CSIC).

In 1983 he was appointed director of high school Cajal of the CSIC, where he was part of its modernization process until 1987. During this period, together with other neuroscientists, he contributed to the creation of the Spanish Society of Neurosciences, of which he was president between 1989 and 1991. Author of more than 200 publications, Professor Del Río directed more than 30 doctoral studies thesis .

In 1989, he was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Navarra and in 2005, director of the area of Neurosciences of the Center for Applied Medical research (CIMA), position which he held until 2007. In 2007 he was appointed Professor Emeritus of the department of Pharmacology.

Professor Del Río has made contributions to the study of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In 2002, he was awarded the award Galien prize for the year's most outstanding pharmaceutical research , a distinction he received from the then Minister of Health, Ana Pastor.
