The international artist Cristina Pato, speaker main of the V annual ICS meeting

Architect Julio Clúa and architect and artist Fernando Pagola will speak at a roundtable on how the new headquarters of high school will contribute to fostering the multidisciplinarity

On November 19 takes place the V annual meeting of Institute for Culture and Society, which is held in this edition under the degree scroll 'Challenges and internship of the multidisciplinarity'. The main speaker is the international artist Cristina Pato, who will speak on 'Transcending disciplines: the sustainable artist of the 21st century'.

Cristina Pato holds a PhD in Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano from Rutgers University, where she was awarded the Irene Alm Memorial Prize for excellence as a researcher and performer. A lecturer and educator, she was named Mellon Visiting Artist in Residence for the 2014-2015 season at the College of Holy Cross, and has performed as speaker and lecturer at Harvard University, UCSB, SphinxCon, Princeton University and other institutions.

Hailed by the New York Times as "a virtuoso burst of energy" and by The Wall Street Journal as "one of the living masters of the bagpipe", the Galician piper, pianist and composer enjoys an active professional degree program dedicated to Galician popular music, classical music and jazz, and her dual degree program has taken her to major stages throughout Europe, the U.S., India, Africa and China.

Cristina Pato was the first female bagpiper to release a solo album (1999) and has since collaborated on the world stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Arturo O'Farril and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Osvaldo Golijov, New York Philharmonic and Paquito D'Rivera.    

Music, a metaphor for the multidisciplinarity

Cristina is a member of the Silk Road Ensemble and a founding member of its Leadership Council, collaborating closely on tours and planning residencies, including the multi-year association between the Silk Road Project and Harvard University. Cristina has combined her love of the bagpipe with a blend of jazz and Latin sounds and her life revolves around a passionate commitment to Education and exchange cultural.

Regarding the main discussion paper of this year's meeting , Ana Marta González, scientific coordinator of the ICS, said that "music is a metaphor for the multidisciplinarity". She also pointed out that reflecting on it is an opportunity to "find new points of connection with the world of art and the social projection of research".

About Cristina Pato, he indicated that "she is a global artist with strong local roots, in which the Anglo-Saxon and Latin worlds meet. She combines a solid training and a stable relationship with prestigious universities, with an internationally recognized artistic career".

In addition to Cristina Pato's intervention, another of the highlights of the workshop is a roundtable on the new ICS headquarters, in which the architect Julio Clúa and the architect and artist Fernando Pagola will explain how the new facilities will favor the multidisciplinarity.
