The Chancellor of the University has died in Rome at the age of 84. Upon hearing the news, President, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, remembered Bishop Javier Echevarría as a generous man,"always attentive to the problems of others, full of hope and with great faith in God."

Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero said that he was a frequent visitor to Pamplona as Chancellor of the University of Navarra; lately also as a patient at the Clinic, and that the enthusiasm with which he spoke of the University's projects was striking. "He enjoyed the progress of the Schools, of the research centers, of the Museum.... And he would encourage us when he perceived that we had concerns or difficulties," noted President. He told us to trust in the intercession of the Founder of the University: "Don't forget," he repeated, "that St. Josemaría financial aid is with you from heaven. And he made us enjoy ourselves very much with his joy and his contagious good humor."
