"When you don't know where you have to go, any wind is against you", said Francisco J. López Seoane, partner director of MPC GROUP Business Skills. This was pointed out during the fifth session of the cycle 'My experience managing people' at School of Economics in which he developed the main ideas of "nautical management".

According to Lopez Seoane, nautical management consists of the application of nautical tools for the improvement of the competences of management, the work in team and the design and application of strategies using different real and virtual nautical experiences. The method combines the management of people with the techniques of sailing.

Using the simile and the rules of sailing, the manager explains, it is possible to see how teams of people work, facing favorable and adverse circumstances.

According to the expert, the crisis has generated changing scenarios that must be managed by a new subject leader, who is the one who gets involved, gives the field and builds the team. The leader only fulfills his function when the members of the team work.

Finally, Lopez Seoane develops the three nautical keys to face the management of permanent change:

  1. Be alert and prepared for the maneuver, both business and the individual.

  2. You can't keep doing the same thing because the environment is constantly changing.

  3. Prudence and boldness must be combined in order to properly manage decision making.

Francisco J. López Seoane is a specialist in Corporate Communication, Internal Communications and Management; and is the developer of "nautical management": linking the worlds of business management and sailing.
