An ICS publication analyses the role of the Society of Jesus in the de-radicalisation of ETA terrorism.

A publication of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra analyzes the contribution of the Spanish Jesuits in the de-radicalization of ETA terrorism during the 1980s. The article, graduate 'Equidistance and positive neutrality: Spanish Jesuits on terrorism, peace, and democracy in the Basque Country from 1978 to 1988', has been published in the journal Q1 Religion, State and Society.

Carl Antonius Lemke Duque, author of article and researcher of the project 'Religion and Civil SocietyHe has analysed the speech of this religious order on issues of peace and democracy. In the first part, Lemke examines the arguments core topic in the Jesuit journal Razón y fe. Later, the position of the Society of Jesus on issues such as peace ethics and European security is explored in the context of high school Fe y Secularidad, founded in Barcelona in 1967.

According to researcher, it is shown that the religious maintained a significant distance from the problem of terrorism. However, the author highlights their efforts to present a new ethical instructions in which to build peace in the context of the Spanish Transition.

The main goal of the Jesuits has been to strengthen pluralism and democracy in Spanish civil society," he said, "a condition he considers necessary for any mediation between conflicts.
