The sculptor, known as the Japanese Gaudí, arrived in Barcelona in 1978 and was impressed by the Sagrada Familia. Therefore, he decided to abandon his art classes at the University of Kyoto and began to work on the temple. Etsuro Sotoo, he says, realized that he should not look at Gaudí, but "look where Gaudí looked" in order to better understand his work. Since then, he has sculpted fifteen works on the Nativity Façade and designed the finials of the gables of the naves with Eucharistic and symbolic motifs, as well as the decoration of the windows and their fruit-shaped pinnacles.
