University of Navarra professor Augusto Sarmiento, new consultant of the Pontifical Family committee
Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Professor Augusto Sarmiento, Associate Dean of the School of Theology, as the new consultant of the committee Pontifical Council for the Family.
The new appointments include six Spaniards, among them the Archbishop of Burgos, Bishop Gil Hellín, who has been appointed member of the committee; or the jurist Rafael Navarro-Valls, also appointed as new consultant. Augusto Sarmiento will thus occupy one of the seventeen positions of new consultants of this committee.
The professor was born in Palencia (Spain) in 1941. He was ordained a priest in 1964, and obtained the doctorate by the School of Theology of the University of Navarra in 1972. Since 1987 he is Full Professor of Moral Theology at the same School, and Associate Dean since 2004. He teaches subjects such as "Christian Marriage", "Moral of the Person", "Marriage and Family Morality", or "History of Moral Theology". He is also pastor of the Navarre towns of Belascoain, Ciriza and Echarri de Etxauri.
