The project for the new headquarters of the high school de Investigaciones Marinas (IIM) of the committee Superior Institute for Scientific Research (CSIC) in Vigo presented by the ETEA joint venture, formed by the Navarrese architectural programs of study Pereda Pérez (Carlos Pereda and Óscar Pérez Silanes) and MRM Architects (Miguel Alonso Flamarique, Roberto Erviti and Mamen Escorihuela), has won the international competition organized by the CSIC, part of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government, result .
As reported by the high school Official Basque-Navarre Architects in a press release grade , the proposal Navarre was a finalist along with 10 other projects and was finally selected in first place. In total, 38 candidatures were presented.
The jury noted that the winning project "reinforces the existing heritage and reduces the landscape impact of the complex". The architects define their proposal as "an extension of the sea towards the land and vice versa, with a series of buildings very contained in terms of scale that are molded to the territory".
The design "emphasizes the connection with the neighborhood of Teis, in the municipality of Vigo, and reduces the landscape impact with a layout of volumes parallel to the sea in the form of bays, which gain in height as they move towards the mountain, and in which the predominant materials are glass and granite".
In this sense, the jury also valued "the easy maintenance of the materials, the economic constructive proposal and the use of patios for the best use of sunlight and natural ventilation".
The CSIC launched the tender in March 2022 with the aim of "building a complex of reference letter in Galicia and 'exemplary' both in its architectural and scientific dimension, to house the facilities of the IIM and the Marine Technology Unit (UTM)".
The RIA Foundation, founded by the recent award Pritzker, David Chipperfield, collaborated as technical attendance in the previous programs of study and in the elaboration of the instructions of the competition.
