The Pineda (Barcelona), Los Robles (Gijón) and Miravalles-El Redín (Pamplona) schools win the 3rd edition of the 'Education, Science and Religion' competition.

342 students from 25 schools from all over Spain have participated in the competition promoted by the CRYF and the ICS of the University of Navarra, which in this edition has focused on the relationship between the theory of evolution and the action of God.

result Students from the schools Pineda (Barcelona), Los Robles (Gijón) and Miravalles-El Redín (Pamplona) have won the contest essay 'Education, Science and Religion' of the University of Navarra. The competition is promoted by the group 'Ciencia, Razón y Fe' (CRYF) and is part of a project of research of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) funded by the John Templeton Foundation. In this edition, the topic of the essays dealt with the 'Relations between the scientific theory of evolution and the action of God in the world'. 

Mireia Nafría Febrer, from high school Pineda, won the first prize award, with work 'Contingency and finality in evolution: are we special? The second prize went to Javier Álvarez Martínez and Alejandro Álvarez Martínez, from high school Los Robles (Gijón), for 'Teorías de evolución en relación con la acción de Dios en el mundo' (Theories of evolution in relation to God's action in the world). And the third prize went to Mónica Idoate, María Ayesa and Antoinette Mbongo, from high school Miravalles-El Redín (Pamplona), for 'Chance and purpose in evolution'.

Runners-up prizes were also awarded to Isabel de Ojeda Herrero, Fátima Alcañiz and Lola Tuduri, from high school Las Tablas-Valverde (Madrid), for '¿Azar? ¿Casualidad? ¿Destino?'; and to María Galindo Triguero, from high school Sansueña (Zaragoza), for 'Deus ex machina'.

A total of 342 students from 25 schools from all over Spain took part in the competition, divided into 148 teams. Of these, 27 students from the aforementioned schools and from Peñarredonda (A Coruña), Montearagón (Zaragoza), Aldeafuente (Madrid), Monteagudo-Nelva (Murcia), El Prado (Madrid), and Vilavella (Valencia) made it to the final phase. The final phase took place by videoconference on Wednesday, 13 May.

Narratives about religion in science subjects

This edition of competition is promoted by the project 'Science and religion in Spanish schools', funded by the John Templeton Foundation. It is directed by Javier Sánchez Cañizares, director of the CRYF and researcher of group 'Mente-Cerebro' of the ICS; and Rubén Herce, member of the CRYF and professor of the School Eclesiástica de Philosophy.

In each of the three academic years covered by the initiative, teachers and students will study a topic topic: the origin of the universe and creation (2018-2019), evolution and divine action in the world (2019-2020) and the origin and specificity of man (2020-2021). The same questions are proposed in the corresponding editions of the essay competition.

The website 'Education, Science and Religion' contains the instructionsof the competitions and explains the nature and purpose of project: to analyse the problems perceived by schoolchildren and teachers in the field of relations between science and religion, in order to try to find short, medium and long term solutions deadline. 

The project also aims to map the main narratives about God and religion used so far in science subjects, to create a permanent group of teachers who will periodically address the pedagogical problems that arise when presenting a worldview where science and faith complement each other, and to prepare specific materials for science and religion courses in Spanish, which can be included in the curricula of science and religion courses. high school diploma.
