"The director people function must be part of the company's strategy."

"The function of director of people must be part of the company's strategy". This was stated by the human resources director of American Express in Spain, Elena Dinesen, during the last session of the 'My experience managing people' cycle at the Master's Degree at Personnel Management Service in Organizations at the University of Navarra.

Dinesen asserts that it is very important for people managers to be part of management committees because, in his opinion, the function must go hand in hand with the strategy of business. For this reason, he considers it essential that the human resources director has a voice and a vote in the management committee .

On the other hand, Dinesen argues that a person who wants to dedicate themselves to managing people must, firstly, have a great capacity for learning, secondly, they must learn to be flexible and be comfortable and adapted to all circumstances and, lastly, have resilience and be prepared for the things that affect day-to-day life.

Likewise, the American Express executive advised the students of Master's Degree to know the business very well, to learn to interpret their income statement very well and to get to know the culture of the company they work for in depth.

This session closes the lecture series 'Experience managing people', which this year was attended by seven human resources directors from companies such as Abengoa, Deloitte, Ferrovial, Cepsa, Maersk and Securitas.

The Master's Degree in Personnel Management Service in Organizations is an eighteen-month program offered at the headquarters of the University of Navarra in Madrid that aims to train professionals who place people at the center of organizations.
